RE: GPS Question ??????

Bumpyroad:
Garmin Nuvi 200: No elevation on screen all the time that I've found.
Click here to compare Nuvi models - add a right column check mark by the models you want to compare and click the COMPARE button at the top. If that doesn't answer your questions about a particular model, download the model's manual.

RE: GPS Question ??????

To see elevation on a Nuvi 200, simply touch the vehicle icon (or triangle) on the map view.

RE: Yet Another GPS Thread

Just did a test on my wife's Garmin Nuvi 200.
1. Checked settings to turn on Proximity Alerts - no entry found.
2. Loaded a low clearance POI file and tagged it with a Prox alert.
3. Checked settings again and Proximity Alerts is now a check box choice
Is it possible that most (all?) road Garmins will do Prox alerts IF you first load a file so tagged?

Re: "...Nuvi 750 from personal experience. It does almost all that you want except for the proximity warnings and route avoidance."
Check out the discussion on this topic at poi-factory.com - Apparently you can do prox warnings if you first load a POI file with the alerts.
Good Luck!

RE: Evacuation Help for RVers from Hurricane

I'll state the obvious just in case: Given the projected path of Gustav and your location, you should go East and Northeast. Good Luck!

RE: Cobra vs TomTom and Garmin

We've been satisfied with two different Garmins: Street Pilot 2720 (now discontinued, but supported)in the RV and a Nuvi 200. Suggest starting to look at Nuvi 260, the cheapest one that will speak street names. Then add the other bells and whistles you want.
The Nuvi name is attached to more than 20 Garmin models, so you should find one that meets your needs.
Whichever brand you choose, I'm sure it'll get you to the game on 11/22. You're bringing a motorhome full of pork sandwiches, right? :-)

RE: Garmin GPS & Trailer Life Campground CD ? ?

I don't have Trailer Life Campground Directory Navigator 2008 or a Garmin 750 and I don't usually know what I'm talking about, but I'll respond anyway :-)
I believe the TL software running on your computer merely uses the location input from a GPS device that is connected to the computer's USB port. All the "action" will take place on your computer not the GPS.
But I could be wrong.

RE: Stone Mountain Campgrounds?

Over-the-air TV reception should be good, especially if your have digital, although I understand the campground is on the eastern side of the mountain and many of the TV transmitters are west.
The National Weather Service has a transmitter on Stone Mountain, so your weather alert radio will work great. (You do have a weather alert radio, right?)

RE: Maine

You mentioned Boston: We were there for July 4. Consider Wompatuck State Park south of Boston as a base. Large, wooded sites; 20amp only; no on-site water, but water available throughout campground, dump station. About 8 miles to the Braintree T station for subway into Boston if you have a car (don't take your RV or tall vehicle --parking garage).
By the way: Those folks in that part of the country don't know sweet tea.

RE: Reduced Volume w/Digital Converter

From Magnavox units troubleshooting:
"Low volume - Sound volume differs depending on the audio out setting. Select 'RF OUT' at step 5 in the 'Setup Wizard' on page 13 if you feel the volume is too low."

RE: Generators and Shore Power

It would be no big deal on our unit as you must plug the shore-tie into the generator outlet to get juice from the generator. The generator runs but you're just burning fuel until its properly plugged in.
Don't other units have such a safety feature?

RE: Pull up to Fort Mountain State Park, GA

You could take GA-2 from Ellijay to the east of Fort Mountain. It is not as steep as coming from Chatsworth and would only add about four miles to your trip from Rincon (I-75, I-575, GA-5, GA-2). But as others have said either way is not that bad. Haven't been to Black Rock Mountain to offer a comparison.

RE: Driving up Cadillac Mountain in MH

Just did it on June 25 and here's the proof and what you'll see.
The free shuttle buses do not go to Cadillac Summit so you'll either have to take a $$ tour bus or drive. Check out the low bridge clearances on the Park Loop Road. We had no problem at just under 11'.

RE: I-84 through to I-81 South, PA to VA

We traveled this route on July 5-6. Don't recall any significant problems but it was Sat/Sun of a holiday weekend. Cruised at 60 mph. 24' Winnie View.
This was our "run for home" after three weeks in New England. Left Wompatuck SP, SE of Boston on Sat. AM - made it to Locust Lake SP, PA for Sat. night. On to Claytor Lake SP, VA for Sun. night. Left I-81 to I-77 in SW VA. Then I-85 into the Atlanta area.

RE: Garmin 260W does not "speak street names"

Check to see if you have selected a VOICE LANGUAGE that is annotated with TTS - text to speech. If you select a language that is not, you won't get street names.

I-75/I-85 Through Atlanta On Weekends

Atlanta's Downtown Connector (where I-75 and I-85 share the same roadbed through Atlanta) is about to be repaved in an eight-month project that starts Friday, March 28. From 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for 30 weeks or more, some part of the Connector will have several lanes closed.
Alternate route would be I-285 around either side of Atlanta. The east-west I-20 through Atlanta is not supposed to be impacted.

I-75/85 Through Atlanta Next 3 Weekends

The Downtown Connector is the strectch of interstate where I-75 and I-85 share the same road bed through downtown Atlanta.
"Connector faces weekend slowdowns
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 02/21/08
Starting as soon as this weekend, crews will "pace" traffic on the Downtown Connector, delaying and restarting traffic so Georgia Power Co. crews can move transmission lines that cross the highway, state Department of Transportation spokeswoman Crystal Paulk-Buchanan said. About once an hour, crews will close several ramps near the 14th Street bridge for 10 to 15 minutes. Traffic will slow to a crawl. DOT may have a more definite schedule soon, but the pacing will probably continue for three weekends."
An alternate route is I-285 around Atlanta.
